Château de Salses
+ My Favorites
Château de Salses is located in the small hamlet of Salses, almost 16 miles north of the Perpignan city centre. It was constructed back in Roman times by Ferdinand of Aragon, and the fort guarded the road between France and Spain. In the 17th century, French military engineer Vauban modified the fort to have the appearance of a chateau. The chateau switched owners many times, and in 1642, Salses was taken over by French forces led by Louis XIII, and the Spanish garrison departed the area permanently. A small gift shop is located on the premises.
